Reason #13 to have a Coach
What happens when things don't go as planned? What happens when a rest week turns into two?
Former National Champion and PROthirteen athlete Lizzy Gunsalus—riding for Cannondale Cyclocrossworld—had a rest week over the Thanksgiving break to travel home to spend the holiday with her family. The plan was to hit it hard the week after the break and the taper to the U23 race on Sunday.
Unfortunately with all the traveling, Lizzy was a little under the weather requiring additional rest to get over this bug. The "bug" pretty much whipped out the "hard" week.
Lizzy's coach took all of this one day at a time. They talked just about every day until she was ready to turn it up the intensity. Workouts were assigned right up to one day out from her first race. She raced in the Collegiate, team relay and the U23's over 4 days. She always performs better when there is some intensity in her legs (the more tired she gets , the better she feels).
On Sunday in her first attempt at a U23 Elite title, she rode to a Bronze Medal!
Bottom line.....having a coach will be able to adjust and make changes on the go. Communicating played a huge part in the U23's result. A coach will find a way to get the most out of an athlete even when things do not go as planned.
